the ruin of wheal kitty is nearby) is on a very quiet lane - it is extremely peaceful even at peak holiday times. west penwith, which stretches to land's end, is wilder than the lusher sheltered estuaries of helford and the fal to the east; it is scattered with pre-historic monuments and settlements, and has a more recent history of tin mining and fishing. location map: cottage location large scale map: cottage location - tr27 6ns 1 polpeor row was converted from two miners' cottages into one in the nineteen fifties, and has been owned by our family since 1962. little has been done to the original structure and many of the internal walls are bare or whitewashed granite or the original wooden partitions. the cottage is simply furnished for five, with some antiques, and local paintings and pottery. downstairs there is a sunny kitchen-breakfast room with views over the garden, a bathroom, and a large comfortable living room with dining table. stairs (rather steep) lead from the hall to three bedrooms upstairs: a large double, a twin and a single. all bedrooms have cupboards built in to the panelling. there is a good-sized, sunny garden, off-road parking, and a shed. southern cornwall is a wonderful holiday area and we have had many lovely family holidays here. there are dozens of beautiful beaches and coves, linked by the long-distance coastal footpath for the more energetic. there are lots of opportunities for bucket-and-spade activities with sandcastles, rock pools and paddling, or more active options with surfing, sailing, kiteboarding, snorkelling, skin-diving or fishing. the area has wonderful bird life (including in the garden!) and is very close to the rspb reserve at hayle estuary and at marazion. there are good facilities nearby for horse riding and trekking, and golf. you can visit the nearby scilly isles by helicopter, ship or plane, passing the dramatic scenery of land's end. the lanes around the cottage are lovely for walking, full of wild flowers, and from the top of the nearby trencrom hill (national trust, but free access) you get a magnificent view of both coasts. south cornwall is famous for its mild climate and sub-tropical gardens, and there are numerous famous gardens (including heligan) within easy reach, as well as the eden project. there are several attractive national trust properties , including st michael's mount, nearby, and we are close to the cliff-top open air minack theatre (book online before you go as it is often sold out). in case of poor weather, there are numerous 'tourist attractions' for visitors - flambards theme park, goonhilly earth station, land's end, the seal sanctuary, mining and telegraph museums and very many more. the cottage is 15 minutes from st ives, carbis bay and hayle to the north, with miles of sandy beaches, tate and hepworth galleries as well as numerous art and pottery galleries, and about 20 minutes from penzance and the lizard peninsula to the south, with lots of attractive fishing harbours and coves. cottage details downstairs kitchen: electric cooker, fridge, microwave, toaster, cooking equipment and crockery etc. fitted cupboards, vinyl floor. built in breakfast table overlooking window to the garden. door to garden. hall: slate floor, electric storage heater, coat hooks, stairs leading to bedrooms (steep but with handrails). door to back and shed. bathroom: bath with electric shower over, loo, washbasin with marble splashback, electric immersion heater in cupboard, spin dryer, vinyl floor. living room: two sofas, fitted carpet, granite alcoves from original cottage fireplaces, large dining table and chairs, two electric storage heaters and fuel-effect fire, bureau, tv with dvd player, pictures etc. exposed beams and wooden ceiling. family games and books. upstairs small lobby at top of stairs double bedroom: double bed, duvet and pillows. cupboard, chest of drawers, chairs etc. fitted carpet. twin bedroom: two single beds with duvets and pillows, chest of drawers, chairs, cupboard, bedside table, rugs. single bedroom: single bed, duvet and pillows. marble topped washstand, cupboard, bedside table, rug. the single bedroom the twin bedroom the double bedroom another view of the double bedroom outside off road parking for two cars. garden with lawn and borders. lots of birds. basic garden furniture. shed to rear with dustbins etc - rather damp but can be used for storage. general notes beds will be freshly made up for your arrival, but please bring your own towels. our cottage retains its original structure, and the ceilings of the ground floor are the underside of the upstairs floor boards, whilst the single and twin rooms are separated only by a wooden partition - sound insulation is not particularly impressive and encourages a peaceful lifestyle! for this reason the cottage is suitable for one or two couples or families, but groups of friends might find it lacks privacy. mobile network connections may be intermittent, depending upon the weather. we usually manage to get text messages by leaving a phone near a south window, and a short walk up the lane gets a voice connection. there is reasonable internet and a land line , recently installed. the outer walls of the cottage are built from granite -
